If you are new to this post, I suggest you to follow my previous few posts(6 lifelong questions for your goal setting, goal setting: internal check list, goal setting: create your own vision, goal setting: flush out your limiting beliefs and goal setting: the judgment day) in order to assist you better in achieving yours dreams. In today session, the focus will be on establishing the primary measurements that assist you to measure your progress as well as removing any roadblocks that you might encounter throughout the journey.
- Determine 3 measures that you can use to grade your progress and success in each area of life. For example, one of the measure could be how much you earn today in absolute term as compare to your goal, this income could be from your full time job, passive income, investing etc. More important, refer to it daily.
- Determine the most important part of your job as it affects your income, and measure your daily activities in that area.
- Set a minimum, specific amount for daily, weekly, and monthly saving and investment, and discipline yourself to put away those amounts.
- Break down every large goal into smaller, measurable, controllable parts. Then focus on accomplishing each part with a fixed deadline. For example, larger goal: Better relationship with family. Smaller, measurable and controllable goals will be like spend at least 20 minutes talking to each of the family member on daily basis. (If you have a big family, 20 minutes could be a lot for some of us here. For others, sometime we don’t even got chance to talk to our family members.)
- Make it a game with yourself to set benchmarks, measures, scorecards, targets, acquire new skills and deadlines for every goal. This is where all the tehniques and tools come into play. Then focus on those numbers, new skills and dates. The goals will take care of themselves.
- Resolve to accomplish at least one specific part of a larger goal each day, and never miss a day.
- Identify a major goal and then ask, “Why aren’t I there already? What is holding me back?” List everything you can think of and apply what you have learned from James’s techniques and tools to narrow the gaps.
- Develop several definitions of your major problem or obstacle. Ask, “What else is the problem?”
“There is no road too long to the man who advances deliberately and without undue haste; there are no honors too distant to the man who prepares himself for them with patience.”
